I still love it, though :)<br />
<br />
Now that it is spring, it is more important than ever to get organized. Everything is getting jammed into the school day along with testing coming up, so people are freaking out about getting it all done. I wanted to share my Daily Teacher Organizer that I use to help me get through the day. In the morning, when my head is clear, I fill out my organizer with all of the things that have to be done that day. Everything that is school related fits in one of the sections in the organizer, and I have a dedicated clipboard for it so I can find it easily and quickly as the day goes on. I am offering it as a <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Daily-Teacher-Organizer-1740053" target="_blank">free download</a> on my blog and in my TPT store.<br />
<br />
There are 3 versions, so use whichever one works best for you. I use the middle version, the one featured below. It does what I need it to do daily. I really find it helpful for me, and hopefully some of you will, too!<br />

I finished my room this year in record time...5pm Friday before school :) I am going to implement a few new things in my classroom that I saw on blogs over the summer and I am keeping some that I thought worked great from last year.<br />
<br />
*FYI - I have about 120 students in 4 science classes (one regular, 1 co-teach, and 2 pre-AP) and one hour long Intervention class where students get enrichment or intervention at the end of the day. I have one lab classroom and work on a team with 4 other teachers (Math, ELA, Soc.Studies and SPED).<br />
<br />
1. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Volume-Level-Board-1393293" target="_blank">New Volume Board</a> -It won't flip, even if it is saved that way, so instead of fighting it, please tilt your head :) If anyone can help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gsZjbSVtJzk/U_pkmmqISlI/AAAAAAAAAso/hBkwujpG3eM/s1600/20140822_150814.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gsZjbSVtJzk/U_pkmmqISlI/AAAAAAAAAso/hBkwujpG3eM/s1600/20140822_150814.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I have used a C.H.A.M.P.S. board, but I found it too hard to switch all sections each time we did something different in class. I saw something similar to this this summer and I decided it would work better. My whole team is using this in each of their classrooms so students get to used to it and know exactly what the expectations are for each section.<br />
<br />
2. Old Supplies Marking<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FYUYl6ORQ40/U_pl18zUCkI/AAAAAAAAAs0/luvMkTj_WDQ/s1600/20140822_150823.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FYUYl6ORQ40/U_pl18zUCkI/AAAAAAAAAs0/luvMkTj_WDQ/s1600/20140822_150823.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I used pickle duct tape on my class sets of supplies last year (glue, scissors, red pens, etc.,...) and I lost so many less supplies to sticky fingers than in years past. I chose a duct tape design that I didn't see many places, so another teacher probably would not have it. Dill Pickles seemed appropriate. I wrapped it around my glue, and made little flags for my scissors and pens and things. When the tape stuck to the sticky side of itself, it was much harder for a student to pry off or for it to just fall off from wear and tear. I decided this was a great thing to do again this year.<br />
<br />
3. New Exit Tickets - Stoplight Method<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tOZPZ1vJHY4/U_pm5eAckwI/AAAAAAAAAs8/0Lp7SciQYxQ/s1600/20140822_150839.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tOZPZ1vJHY4/U_pm5eAckwI/AAAAAAAAAs8/0Lp7SciQYxQ/s1600/20140822_150839.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I have wanted to routinely implement exit tickets in my classroom for many years. It has been hard to find a system that was not wasting paper, was easy for me to assess, and was easy for the students to remember how to do. I saw this <a href="https://www.teachingchannel.org/videos/daily-lesson-assessment?utm_source=Alpha+List&utm_campaign=e94f9d80a7-Newsletter_November_10_2012&utm_medium=email" target="_blank">video on Teacher Channel</a>. It seemed really easy to make, and the students could easily slap them up on the wall as they left the room. The green one says, "Today I LEARNED...(be specific!)." The yellow one says, "A QUESTION I have is..." The red one says, "What STOPPED my learning was..." Hopefully I can easily grab stickies by color and really make sure I focus on those points. This will also help me prioritize which exit slips get the most attention when I have to leave right after class and cannot assess 120 slips in one evening.<br />
<br />
4. Old Enter and Exit Checklists<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d_xtjfbdpcM/U_pouqbdoWI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/ArSGjich0Uk/s1600/20140822_150857.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-d_xtjfbdpcM/U_pouqbdoWI/AAAAAAAAAtQ/ArSGjich0Uk/s1600/20140822_150857.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DIB_v4uzPeE/U_poqrLpDxI/AAAAAAAAAtI/Jultr_ZqzCE/s1600/20140822_150846.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DIB_v4uzPeE/U_poqrLpDxI/AAAAAAAAAtI/Jultr_ZqzCE/s1600/20140822_150846.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
I used these last year, and they were a good reminder of my expectations when entering my classroom and before being able to leave the classroom. It also gave me a place to direct the students to reference when they forgot or needed redirection.<br />
<br />
5. <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Finger-Signal-Posters-1393376" target="_blank">New/Old Finger Signs</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Aq7loaHwA0M/U_ppeohrC2I/AAAAAAAAAtY/eaGvAR5o5rA/s1600/20140822_150915.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Aq7loaHwA0M/U_ppeohrC2I/AAAAAAAAAtY/eaGvAR5o5rA/s1600/20140822_150915.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
I know a lot of teachers think 5th graders are too old for finger signs, but they make my class run a lot smoother. Students hold up certain fingers for certain needs, so you can just nod your head while you are teaching or talking to others without interruption. It is especially helpful during testing and other silent times. I just updated my posters from last year so they were easier to see from across the room (my science lab is pretty long).<br />
<br />
6. New Absent Files<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ifkVaBrJByI/U_pq6wyTMBI/AAAAAAAAAtk/ZtxWBp-rIoM/s1600/20140822_151935.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ifkVaBrJByI/U_pq6wyTMBI/AAAAAAAAAtk/ZtxWBp-rIoM/s1600/20140822_151935.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
I think it age appropriate for 5th graders to be responsible for their own absent work. Last year, I had a folder on the wall per class. If a student was absent, I would write their name on the papers and put them in the right folder. This year, I made a simple stacked file pocket out of file folders and duct tape. It was another idea I saw this summer. It was really easy to make. Instructions are <a href="http://thesilverlininginteaching.blogspot.com/2012/07/monday-made-it.html" target="_blank">here</a>. When a student is absent, I can just put all the copies from the day in the folder and they can get one out for the day they were absent. We will see if this way is easier that last year's way.<br />
<br />
7. Old Color-Coded Classes<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s9iVaMPcEuk/U_pswH0EhII/AAAAAAAAAtw/V8RWHWbV3q0/s1600/20140822_152004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s9iVaMPcEuk/U_pswH0EhII/AAAAAAAAAtw/V8RWHWbV3q0/s1600/20140822_152004.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l0DKx3SNTMo/U_pswc74nOI/AAAAAAAAAt0/kB_7lL54i58/s1600/20140822_152010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l0DKx3SNTMo/U_pswc74nOI/AAAAAAAAAt0/kB_7lL54i58/s1600/20140822_152010.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nZPGYIk99wY/U_pswMFkv4I/AAAAAAAAAt4/MRHFo1eFFqI/s1600/20140822_152023.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nZPGYIk99wY/U_pswMFkv4I/AAAAAAAAAt4/MRHFo1eFFqI/s1600/20140822_152023.jpg" height="360" width="640" /></a></div>
To make my life and the students' lives easier, each class is color-coded. The labels for their turn in boxes, journal bins, and warm up / pass back shelves all have the same color. We will also tape a piece of matching colored paper on the spine of their journals so we can easily get each journal back into the correct bin.<br />
<br />
Hopefully all of these classroom management strategies will help make life a little easier in the classroom so we can maximize learning time. I hope you have a great year, and I will post again, soon!<br />
<br />

I have been working hard to get it just right this year. I am only implementing a few new things and tweaking the rest of the ones I have already done in the past. I have a great team of teachers with me this year, and I cannot be happier about how it has gone so far.<br />
<br />
We got to see Manny Scott, one of the original Freedom Writers at Convocation, and it was inspiring. We are the salt that gets kids thirsty to learn!<br />
<br />
As soon as I finish my room, I will post pictures along with the classroom management strategies that go with them.<br />
<br />
Have a great day!<br />

It may sound weird, but think about an activity. Would you rather have to do this one...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Za6Ec0YuD8w/UxzOpYGvk4I/AAAAAAAAAoE/hu6pUvysXho/s1600/Weather2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Za6Ec0YuD8w/UxzOpYGvk4I/AAAAAAAAAoE/hu6pUvysXho/s1600/Weather2.jpg" height="247" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
...or this one?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8zhhGsC9rTk/UxzOpdwFyFI/AAAAAAAAAoU/xshXDgnFgMA/s1600/Weather1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8zhhGsC9rTk/UxzOpdwFyFI/AAAAAAAAAoU/xshXDgnFgMA/s1600/Weather1.jpg" height="247" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Exactly!<br />
<br />
There are lots of different programs and ways to do this. Here is how I make cute quick backgrounds for my activities.<br />
<br />
First, I start in Publisher with a shape or clip that I like. This one is a raindrop. I place them on the page in a random yet patterned way. I make some different sizes, too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e28GoYg6HLU/UxzMN1pix8I/AAAAAAAAAnM/B3VbTc7JzbY/s1600/Step1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e28GoYg6HLU/UxzMN1pix8I/AAAAAAAAAnM/B3VbTc7JzbY/s1600/Step1.png" height="218" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Once I have everything where I want it, I save the page as a .png with 300 dpi for better resolution.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eggkaCqF8Do/UxzMN88FQlI/AAAAAAAAAng/NcrP5HjFnZU/s1600/Step2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eggkaCqF8Do/UxzMN88FQlI/AAAAAAAAAng/NcrP5HjFnZU/s1600/Step2.png" height="199" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now I open it up in a photo editing program like Adobe Photoshop Elements. Paint on the basic PC Accessories can work, too, but the resolution and options aren't nearly as helpful.. I make all of my raindrops black and then save it again as a .png file.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WWdR3LsjJb8/UxzMN0njrzI/AAAAAAAAAnY/y4m854j4KM4/s1600/Step3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WWdR3LsjJb8/UxzMN0njrzI/AAAAAAAAAnY/y4m854j4KM4/s1600/Step3.png" height="202" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now I can reopen it and change the colors in the background and the raindrops. Elements lets me do this by changing the 2 colors I am working with and using the stamp tool.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9-j3Tg-xIoU/UxzMOVpyPZI/AAAAAAAAAn4/Rb-dQLc61K8/s1600/Step4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9-j3Tg-xIoU/UxzMOVpyPZI/AAAAAAAAAn4/Rb-dQLc61K8/s1600/Step4.png" height="217" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then this is what I get.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XvDoxVcBGWA/UxzMOjeQBEI/AAAAAAAAAns/kcI4WlzNvmI/s1600/Step5.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XvDoxVcBGWA/UxzMOjeQBEI/AAAAAAAAAns/kcI4WlzNvmI/s1600/Step5.png" height="145" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I can also back it up and switch my colors around for this effect.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9oRr_rn8_E4/UxzMOx1-mTI/AAAAAAAAAn0/XXBwuI5FSWM/s1600/Step6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9oRr_rn8_E4/UxzMOx1-mTI/AAAAAAAAAn0/XXBwuI5FSWM/s1600/Step6.png" height="150" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Save the file as a new name like RaindropsBlue.png and keep them in an easy to find folder.<br />
<br />
Now you can try and make a new cute background for any of your classroom activities, too! Enjoy<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzQRLwypJ8LEbGpNUVpZTGJ4WmM/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank"> these backgrounds</a> for free personal or commercial use with a link back to my blog or TpT store.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tpXU8HgTfU4/UxzOpLl1NLI/AAAAAAAAAoI/CWflcuYY-vw/s1600/SignatureBrown.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tpXU8HgTfU4/UxzOpLl1NLI/AAAAAAAAAoI/CWflcuYY-vw/s1600/SignatureBrown.png" height="172" width="320" /></a></div>

Space Night was on Friday, and I thought to myself, "Well, now that Space Night is behind me, things should settle down a bit." Uh, what was i thinking?!?<br />
<br />
Between RTI, and SSI, and CBAs and missing work, and department stuff, and testing preparation, and curriculum callibration, and getting lessons together, and making my fun anchor charts, and kids in ISS, it is just another normal day at school :)<br />
<br />
Here are some recent anchor charts I have made:<br />
<br />

I am really loving how nice and useful our journals have become this year. We don't have textbooks, so our journals are our resource. Most students take a lot of pride in keeping them nice and neat. We do a foldable or notes on the left side, usually an activity afterwards with the new material, then they complete an application or evaluation journal prompt on the right side so I can see if they got it. Usually there is a diagram or something involved along with writing, so I can tell pretty quickly just walking around who got the material and who didn't. Here is an example of our<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sun-Foldable-and-Activities-for-Interactive-Notebooks-1061391" target="_blank"> Sun foldable</a> and journal entry.<br />

Evidently I have not blogged since the last day of November. Yikes! The holidays is a very busy time for school and home, but like I have to tell you!<br />
<br />
I am starting the year with the newest edition of currently with <a href="http://ohboy3rdgrade.blogspot.com/2013/12/january-currently.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2Fjtmhg+%28Oh%27+Boy+4th+Grade%29" target="_blank">Oh' Boy Fourth Grade</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3x49Ub8iJsg/UsXMumNL9qI/AAAAAAAAAjE/GPggPJct4-o/s1600/January+Currently.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3x49Ub8iJsg/UsXMumNL9qI/AAAAAAAAAjE/GPggPJct4-o/s640/January+Currently.png" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Listening: I love hearing my family happy. The hubby playing video games, the kids playing nicely, together, and me sitting here typing getting to hear it all. These are peaceful moments that feel like heaven.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Loving: I LOVE coconut! I bought some coconut oil this week and got to thinking what I could do with it. Well, it helps make an amazingly tasty, aromatic Coconut Almond Granola. I posted a recipe I made up for it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c-rPeF3iFiI/UsXTqwZ0fRI/AAAAAAAAAjU/BfExl7HaJWI/s1600/Coconut+Almond+Granola+Recipe.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-c-rPeF3iFiI/UsXTqwZ0fRI/AAAAAAAAAjU/BfExl7HaJWI/s640/Coconut+Almond+Granola+Recipe.png" width="494" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Thinking: My list is gratefully pretty small. That just equals more time to play!<br />
<br />
Wanting: As long as I reestablish my expectations, I think we can continue having fun and learning as normal when we return.<br />
<br />
Needing: Granted, our house was not as bad as some friends Christmas morning, but after all the presents for the kids that had packaging, ties, wraps and things we put together ourselves, I could use a maid to come clean up, do some laundry, and maybe empty a trash can or two.<br />
<br />
Tradition: This is our second year with an Elf on the Shelf. My daughter did not understand it as well last year as she did this year at 3. She would talk to him, remind her baby brother not to touch him so he wouldn't lose his magic, and let everyone know how sad she was he had to leave Christmas Eve but that he would be back next year at Thanksgiving. We loved this, and hopefully he comes back and sees us next year!<br />
<br />
I cannot wait to read others' Currently and see what everyone else is up to! Have a great time back to school!<br />

Enjoy your (hopefully) 3 weeks of school until Christmas Break!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03005261130922784218noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3229741734320256169.post-23598490464362781832013-11-27T16:14:00.000-08:002013-11-27T16:14:13.969-08:00Thankful for time to create new activities and a sale!It is already Wednesday, and I feel like I have gotten so much accomplished since school was out Friday.<br />
<br />
So far, I have...<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>created 3 new foldable/activity sets for our interactive science notebooks</li>
<li>created 2 task card sets</li>
<li>created 3 holiday think tanks</li>
<li>made a Robot Researcher station for my classroom</li>
<li>baked the <a href="http://therecipecritic.com/2013/09/pumpkin-cheesecake-snickerdoodles/" target="_blank">most delicious pumpkin cheesecake snickerdoodles</a></li>
<li>went to the grocery store...twice...</li>
<li>saw Santa</li>
<li>did all the kids laundry (folded and put away!)</li>
<li>did my laundry (folded, but not put away)</li>
<li>cleaned the entire playroom...twice...</li>
<li>beat LEGO Marvels (I snuck in some video game time!)</li>
<li>went to the doctor, dentist, and scheduled the eye doctor (what else are holiday breaks for?</li>
<li>painted my toes</li>
</ul>
<div>
I am sure there is more, but I cannot think of it all. Thank goodness my youngest still naps 2-3 hours a day and my 3 year old "rests" during that time. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We are into Earth Science in our curriculum, so here are our newest activities we are using.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I really don't think I like the cover to the WED foldable. Everytime I look at it, it just makes something in my brain go crooked. What do you think?</div>

<br />
What am I thankful for this year? I am thankful for a healthy, happy family, great friends, a husband who loves me "just the way I am," and a job I love. I am thankful for a place to find and share great teacher ideas, like Teachers Pay Teachers, where I can get wonderful products for my classroom and share ones I have found or made that work great. I am thankful for a teacher blogger community that supports one another and affirms that we are, indeed, doing the right thing in our classrooms and lives.<br />
<br />
We had a Thanksgiving-themed day on Friday for our team (5 teachers), and I think the kids had a lot of fun. We also had career day that morning, along with the last day for kids to finish their math benchmarks, so we were busy.<br />
<br />
In science, I had kids create a soil data disk from a soil sample from Plymouth Rock (our playground) with a brad, cardstock and a paper plate where they had to analyze a soil sample for it color, texture, ability to retain water, and it's ability to support life. Then they had to disguise the data disk to hide it from others at the First Thanksgiving. They came out really nice, and the kids had fun analyzing their samples and disguising them.<br />
<br />
For career day, my sister, who is an Animal Behavior Analyst, got to come to my class and share with my kids how she uses data and graphs (yea! Real world graphs!) to analyze the behavior of different animals at the zoo to see how they are doing, what they prefer, and their well-being. The kids really loved seeing her presentation and playing her games and activities she prepared. I think she really is a teacher at heart :)<br />
<br />
More bonuses, my sister stayed with us for 2 days, played with her niece and nephew while I put together a set of <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Santas-Landform-Adventure-Weathering-Erosion-and-Deposition-Task-Cards-992000" target="_blank">WED task cards</a>, and even went with us to go see Santa. I love my sweet sister so very much! Here are the task cards I made while she was entertaining the little people.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t7EOz1-ePqI/UpFZqNEqKlI/AAAAAAAAAgc/XhKdTHQCBa4/s1600/Santas+Landform+Adventure+Task+Cards.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t7EOz1-ePqI/UpFZqNEqKlI/AAAAAAAAAgc/XhKdTHQCBa4/s320/Santas+Landform+Adventure+Task+Cards.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
It is a set of 20 task cards following Santa as he travels through the United States delivering presents, noticing landform changes, and getting a little side-tracked along the way. This is one of the things my kids will do the last week of school in December. Click the picture below to get to the cards.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Santas-Landform-Adventure-Weathering-Erosion-and-Deposition-Task-Cards-992000" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TxJyvHPfFAE/UpFZpW63QKI/AAAAAAAAAgU/lMSprvAmU9E/s320/Santas+Landform+Adventure+Task+Cards2.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3tcG9HRLBv0/UpFZo2qIUsI/AAAAAAAAAgQ/-cGEKFscwA4/s1600/Santas+Landform+Adventure+Task+Cards3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3tcG9HRLBv0/UpFZo2qIUsI/AAAAAAAAAgQ/-cGEKFscwA4/s320/Santas+Landform+Adventure+Task+Cards3.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
I really hope my students like it as much as they liked Frankenstein's adventure without electricity for Halloween! I love doing themed stuff to help remind my kids that they can always have fun while learning; it does not always have to be an either/or kids of situation.<br />
<br />
Stay tuned to see what else I get to create over the break. I am already 3/4 the way done with 2 earth science foldables and have a bunch of other ideas getting ready to roll....<br />
<br />
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!<br />

There are so many fun labs to do here, and the kids love them! I have new anchor charts to add to my collection, too. <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-sxnjRQYZgMg/UorVyLmqJeI/AAAAAAAAAgA/LPsFm8whVs0/s640/blogger-image--740423078.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-sxnjRQYZgMg/UorVyLmqJeI/AAAAAAAAAgA/LPsFm8whVs0/s640/blogger-image--740423078.jpg"></a></div>Formation of sedimentary rocks and </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-pukRJOgh7cU/UorVh2mmewI/AAAAAAAAAf4/tgxEPA411ug/s640/blogger-image-800607910.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-pukRJOgh7cU/UorVh2mmewI/AAAAAAAAAf4/tgxEPA411ug/s640/blogger-image-800607910.jpg"></a></div>Types of soil, which we will fill out tomorrow. <br />
I will be holding a Veteran's Day Sale for my entire <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Caitlin-Miller" target="_blank">Teachers Pay Teachers store</a> this weekend. Sunday 11-10 and Monday 11-11, my whole store will be 10% off. Also, 50% of what I make on these two days will be donated to <a href="http://heroesproject.org/" target="_blank">Heroes Project</a>, a non-profit organization that support veterans who have returned from active duty and need support. It is a great organization and has done a lot for people around me.<br />
<br />
I hope you get a chance to honor a veteran Monday and enjoy some smiles with those in your community!<br />

Sometimes I make them before school so all my classes see them. Then they are nice and neat. <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xGizk4qoPSY/Unjvqn_sPsI/AAAAAAAAAe8/ow9emI-cEsE/s640/blogger-image--129413294.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xGizk4qoPSY/Unjvqn_sPsI/AAAAAAAAAe8/ow9emI-cEsE/s640/blogger-image--129413294.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Sometimes I start from scratch and make them with one of my classes. Here is what a 5th grade science teacher schedule looks like in an intermediate school in Texas.<br />

I have 120 students between 4 classes. One is a regular education class, then I have one pre AP class and 2 co-teach science classes. We had so many SPED kids in the Gen ED setting we had to double up the Science and Social Studies co-teach classes on my team.<br />
<br />
Panther time is a 55 minute built in intervention time. I have the kids in my classroom who do not need intervention during the 9 week session so they are doing think tanks in my room. Read more about think tanks <a href="http://cmillerscience.blogspot.com/2013/06/are-you-on-board-with-think-tanks.html" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />

I think my team of teachers were more excited about it than the kids! I had all these ideas for today: dry ice flowing out of my classroom, cobwebs everywhere, and all sorts of decorations, but that sounded too expensive for a day of excitement and there would be lots of kids coming through my hall who would not be able to help tearing it down :( I decided a while ago to make them a Halloween themed review activity, so I made a Forms of Energy Task Card set using Melonheadz clip art. I love all of her work!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Forms-of-Energy-Task-Cards-925030" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ATMJT_OXzfk/UnMKQwfLXsI/AAAAAAAAAd0/mOxb5uBRs5w/s400/Halloween+Energy+Task+Cards.png" width="308" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The kids really seemed to like this. Then as they finished, they went back in the classroom and created a Halloween crossword puzzle practicing their critical thinking skills. It takes a lot of planning to come up with words that can link up, clues that are not obvious, and put it all together without having to fill in letters and erase them. They enjoyed this, too. I think that they were excited to be doing Halloween themed stuff without having to be all engrossed in it because they were "too old for that." I love the crossword puzzle activity for a few reasons. It helps them practice their vocabulary, learn how to plan ahead, and they enjoy trying to solve someone else's crossword puzzle. They don't even have to have that many words on there. Five to Six words done correctly shows they can do it. I never give them a minimum amount on anything or I will have too many kids just doing that exact amount. Here is a<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzQRLwypJ8LEV25leUpwQWxpUDg/edit?usp=sharing" target="_blank"> freebie </a>for you. It is a crossword puzzle maker set with a planning sheet, instructions, and an example. I hope you enjoy it and can use it for all sorts of things :)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NTDSqJsPLZ0/Um07H5GZ6LI/AAAAAAAAAcw/bdK2zkFbqYY/s1600/Sunday+Serenity.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NTDSqJsPLZ0/Um07H5GZ6LI/AAAAAAAAAcw/bdK2zkFbqYY/s400/Sunday+Serenity.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I felt like the day needed an icon to go with it :) Between playing with the kids, breaking up hair pulling fights, trying to clean anything, and the constant question, "When is Aunt Gwenie getting here?" I may never finish this post!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I have been constantly looking at my classes and students this year to find a way to motivate and engage them. They have needed more in these areas than any group I have had before. One of the things I had purchased this summer was a set of <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Depth-and-Complexity-Task-Cards-Science-660161" target="_blank">Depth and Complexity Science Task Cards from TpT</a>. I loved them! I could not wait to use them in my classroom this year. Well, here we are at the end of October, and i just got a chance to use them. I knew before we could use them, I would have to go over what the cards meant, the different icons and so on. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well, a friend emailed me <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/norwegian-town-uses-giant-mirrors-to-combat-the-winter-darkness-193546562.html" target="_blank">this news story</a> Friday about a small town using reflection to help their city get more sunlight, and I thought this was a great chance to get started with depth and complexity. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Depth and Complexity (developed by Dr. Sandra Kaplan) is a way to integrate higher level thinking skills into every day learning. It is geared towards GT studies, but I think it has a purpose for all students.I loved that there were so many ways for students to show they understood the material. My first impression of depth and complexity was that it had to be based on a reading selection. Now that we used it, and I researched more this weekend, I can see its use on just specific topics that we are learning. I found lots of great resources that all sparked ides. There are a bunch on Teachers Pay Teacher and at JTaylorEducation.com, and you will start to see some pop up in my TpT store soon, as well. In the meantime, if you get a chance, take a look at Depth and Complexity and see if it is something that would benefit your kids. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you want to start using Depth and Complexity, I recommend these resources to get started.</div>

Warm Up Wrap Up<br />
<br />
Our district requires us to use think tanks during our intervention block, and since we are about to start a new six weeks, I needed a new set. So I have posted my 6 newest think tanks in my TpT store. I also included them in a bundle. I like the bundles. Maybe when we finish Physical Science, I should put all my interactive notebook entries in a bundle...hmmm...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I guess I am not going to get the chance to blog but on the weekends with school as busy as it is :)<br />
<br />
As many of you have read, I wanted to redesign our science interactive notebooks this year. I had seen how many other teachers had done it and how I was currently doing it. We don't really have a textbook for 5th grade in Texas that is useful (ours is from '00-'0ish and still have some VERY old standards in it), so our notebook is what we create as our resource. Most students take a lot of pride in making it nice and neat and accurate. So this year I am doing a left side/right side notebook. On the left we put notes, foldables, observations, and then on the right we put diagrams, data tables, graphs, and write out answers to questions that show what we know.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GU5m709HxTo/Uki4EXUHLaI/AAAAAAAAAZA/oaROB-ACTcc/s1600/Journal1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GU5m709HxTo/Uki4EXUHLaI/AAAAAAAAAZA/oaROB-ACTcc/s320/Journal1.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZMFCwquZD5M/Uki4EQMU6-I/AAAAAAAAAY8/VtYThLyBpjg/s1600/Journal2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZMFCwquZD5M/Uki4EQMU6-I/AAAAAAAAAY8/VtYThLyBpjg/s320/Journal2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-datv9P_wAss/Uki4EXtvHlI/AAAAAAAAAZE/vzYaHxoEB1E/s1600/Journal3.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-datv9P_wAss/Uki4EXtvHlI/AAAAAAAAAZE/vzYaHxoEB1E/s320/Journal3.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
With this new style, I am having to re-write EVERY single notebook entry, which is worth it, but very time consuming. Since I do most of my planning with my teacher buddy on Thursday, and we almost always have notebook entries on Mondays, I am always typing away on the computer during my kids nap time on the weekends or on Sunday evenings if we just had too much fun playing.<br />
<br />
That being said, here are two new ones for forms of energy and light.<br />
<br />

Students love the superhero project every year. They get to design a superhero or use one that has already been created and show what they know about matter, force and energy by applying it to their superpowers. They make trading cards, too, that they get to trade after everyone has presented their superheroes. It is a lot of fun.<br />

We took notes on mixtures, solutions and separating them. Then, using the <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Separating-Mixtures-Lab-873935" target="_blank">Separating Mixtures Lab</a>, we looked at the physical properties of sand, salt and iron so we could use them to find a way to most effectively separate them. Students designed their procedure based on their thoughts with their lab group.<br />

I hope to get to do many more anchor charts with my students this year! </div>

I have done just one for my subject, collective team newsletters, informal weekly emails. Last year was pretty easy to do weekly newsletters for my team because it consisted of only 2 people! This year, there are 5 of us.<br />
<br />
The first 3 weeks of school, I had sent out weekly emails at the end of the week (that reminds me, I need to send one for this week! Oops!). I like the quickness of weekly emails, but I LOVE the cuteness of the formal newsletter. Here is what they looked like last year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PbYIwH-aLDU/UjSdCsS_tVI/AAAAAAAAAVw/YHbx7G2AvGk/s1600/NewsletterEX.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PbYIwH-aLDU/UjSdCsS_tVI/AAAAAAAAAVw/YHbx7G2AvGk/s320/NewsletterEX.png" width="247" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MaAUlWORDvU/UjSdQcwsCNI/AAAAAAAAAWI/iRwnwDT4EEM/s1600/Example2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MaAUlWORDvU/UjSdQcwsCNI/AAAAAAAAAWI/iRwnwDT4EEM/s320/Example2.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year, I don't think I am going to be able to get this all together for my team like I have before, but who am I to keep the cuteness from anyone else? So I cleaned them up for selling and made an editable PowerPoint for each month. Then teachers can just add what they want to the boxes and save each week! They can be then emailed to parents, posted on your website, or printed and handed out to your class. So here is what the template looks like in PowerPoint.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pOtsl9npuFA/UjSdDPFa0XI/AAAAAAAAAWA/5m76f8iZvKY/s1600/September2.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-pOtsl9npuFA/UjSdDPFa0XI/AAAAAAAAAWA/5m76f8iZvKY/s320/September2.png" width="247" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FDfE06Aezxg/UjSdCiyy2rI/AAAAAAAAAV8/Og3DijrugS4/s1600/September1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FDfE06Aezxg/UjSdCiyy2rI/AAAAAAAAAV8/Og3DijrugS4/s320/September1.png" width="247" /></a></div>
<br />
I added text boxes to each section so you can just click and type. I have them for all 12 months (I had to make a July just to sell since we would hopefully NEVER have regular school in July!) for sale in my TpT store.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Listening: I love to cook for people. My team can no longer all eat all the goodness I bring them, so I am looking for great recipes to meet their new needs so I can still share what I love :)<br />
<br />
Loving: I cannot wait o get these anchor charts started! I have found so many on Pintrest, which I finally joined after a few years of pushing from my friends. Glad I did! Feel free to follow me at Lilosmommy8014.<br />
<br />
Thinking: I want to make sure all my new teachers are taken care of. I have one new teacher to our district, one new to our subject and one new to our district and subject. I don't want them to freak out about lessons :)<br />
<br />
Wanting: All the foldables we put in our journals make them fat with construction paper. I am wanting colored copy paper that is cheap since it is nice and thin.<br />
<br />
Needing: My 15 month old has been climbing out of his crib like a monkey. Right now, he is in his old pack 'n' play until we find a more permanent solution. We are open to suggestions. He is not ready for a toddler bed, unless we get the time to train him to stay in it. The crib is as low as it goes, and my aunt suggested we drill new holes to make it go even lower. We will see how this goes...<br />
<br />
Loving: I love teaching science and I am happy to be at work again :)<br />
<br />
Join in on the linky fun, and have a great week!<br />
